Argyll & Bute's six man succumbed to a heavy defeat at the hands of the North East at a cold & breezy Cruden Bay last weekend. Buoyed by a great win by messrs Timms & Pirie in the second of the morning foursomes, it was all to play for in the six afternoon singles.

Things started to look up for A&B with four of their players all up in the middle of the round , however inexplicably they all contrived to lose narrowly and with Timms and Pirie unable to repeat their morning exploits the team suffered a 6-0 whitewash in the singles to go down 8-1.

This was a shattering blow to the team who at looked as if they may deliver team manager Gilchrist a memorable win, but whom all struggled down the stretch when it mattered.

The next fixture is against Clackmannan in August at Machrihanish on Sunday 3rd August.

Matchplay winner presented with trophy by Jim Innes Machrihanish Club Captain

Graham Bolton from Bute secured his fifth Argyll & Bute match-play championship over a windswept Machrihanish links last weekend by defeating Millport's Les Pirie 4 and 3 in the final. Strong easterly windows and fast firm greens made the exposed links a stern test. Despite this there was some good golf played with most of the matches going down to the wire. However it was veterans Bolton and Pirie who emerged from the pack to face each other in the final. Bolton took the early initiative with gains at the first, third and fourth holes. Pirie battled back bravely, but some inspired putting from Bolton kept Pirie at bay, closing him out with a 4ft par putt at the 15th hole. Results:

Argyll & Bute secured a narrow victory against Fife at a waterlogged Millport on Sundayy.

With constant rain making the greens barely playable, it was inevitable that the game was going to be decided on the morning foursomes.

Game one saw locals Les Pirie and Gordon Lundie fight back to secure a half point with James White and Brian Soutar, Gordon provided the defining moment by holing a fine down hill putt on the 18th green.

Game two saw the experienced George Reynolds and Graham Bolton against Greg Paterson and Alex Main. Despite clearly not at their best the Rothesay/Bute combination were still good enough to win easily 4&3.

The final match saw Chris Timms and Greg Watson against the experienced pairing of Scott Michie and David Imrie. The home pairing were up early in the match , but the lead slipped around the turn and a tight match ensued. Chris & Greg with a couple of clutch putts at 16th & 18th secured a half point , leaving the score at 2-1 for the home side.

Play was suspended for 1 1/2 hours in a forlorn hope for the incessant rain to cease. However after a brief respite, the rain continued to fall heavily.

With several greens now submerged the afternoon singles were cancelled.

Final Score Argyll & Bute 2 Fife 1

Argyll & Bute's Boys Team

The Scottish Boys Area Team Championships was held at the Forres Golf Club on the 10th of June. Argyll and Bute were represented by Michael Fraser(Glencruitten), Ian McNab(Glencruitten), Colin Robinson(Millport) and Scott Turnbull(Miilport).

The teams total of 374 left them in 14th position, this was an improvement over the 2006 performance of one place but that doesn't tell the whole story. The boys where a full 37 shots better that 2006 and only 10 shots off a top ten finish. Individually Michael's 1 over par recorded a top twenty placing whilst Colin's 3 over saw him in the top thirty in a field that included SGU junior tour members and Scottish Internationalists. A field of ninety seven competitors assembled at Cowal Golf Club last Sunday to compete in the 2007 Spring Meeting. Clubs from all over Argyll & Bute were represented with David Graham of Machrihanish defending the title he won at Rothesay year.

Andy Jones of the host club led both events for most of the day with his net 69 , until John McCluskey also of Cowal came in with a net 67. This confirmed Tyre's return to form accompanying his runner up finish at the Area Matchplay Championship in April.

Argyll & Bute’s six man slipped to a heavy defeat at the hands of the North East District last Sunday at Murcar Links.

Bobby Willan in the third match let slip an early lead to go down to a 3&2 defeat at the hands of Laurie Philips. George McMillan out in game four struggled with a bout of the shanks and eventually succumbed to a heavy defeat.

Debutant Greg Watson with a magnificent 325 yard tee shot to 12 feet at the 18th secured a half point against Scottish Youth cap Philip McLean. The quarter finals were mostly closely fought affairs with Gordon Tyre pipping Les Pirie at the last hole and Graham Bolton squeezing through at the 19th against Philip Murphy. Shock of the round was Craig Aitken's 2&1 win victory over George Reynolds. The final tie of the round saw Bobby Willan play Chris Timms, this was a close match until Bobby holed in one at the 11th to gain the initiative and run out a 4&3 winner.

Sunday's semi finals saw Bobby Willan play Graham Bolton and Craig Aitken against Gordon Tyre. Bobby against Graham was a low scoring match with both players holing a succession of putts with Graham eventually securing a 4 & 3 victory. The second semi was a close nip and tuck affair with Craig birdieing the last hole to put the game into extra holes, however the experienced Tyre held his nerve to make a par four and secure a win.

he final saw Gordon Tyre and Graham Bolton line up in repeat of their 2001 final. A scrappy start saw Tyre take an early lead however some errant putting saw him relinquish the lead at the 7th. This seemed to spark Bolton into life as his fine short game was rewarded with wins at the 8th,10th,11th, 12th and 13th. This accompanied by a 20 foot putt at the 14th for par was enough for Bolton to secure his fourth matchplay title to accompany his seven strokeplay victories.

The county executive would like to thank Machrihanish Golf Club for again hosting the event and for presenting the course in such fine condition for the time of year.

This weekend sees an Argyll & Bute Team take on Renfrewshire at Gourock in a seniors/youths/boys fixture.

The team selected is: Gordon Lundie (Millport) David Hunter (Cowal) Greg Watson (Dunaverty) Craig Aitken (Glencruitten) Alan Mckie (Glencruitten) Iain McNab (Glencruitten) Michael Fraser (Glencruitten) David Graham (Machrihanish) Paul Robinson (Millport) Colin Robinson (Millport)

Argyll & Bute's County team slipped to a narrow defeat at the hands of Renfrewshire last Sunday at Gourock GC.

The team of six senior team members with four youth members achieved parity during the morning foursomes with 2.5 points a piece. The highlight being a stunning win for County Champ Ross Currie & his veteran partner David Howie who comprehensively trounced Keith Hamilton & Nicky Gold by 4 & 3. The other win in the foursomes was produced by David Weir and Alan McKie who beat their opponents by 4 & 2.The half point was gained by Les Pirie & Jim O'Donnell who made a great four from the trees to tie their match.

With all to play for in the afternoon Argyll & Bute started promisingly with Ross Currie again producing the goods beating Renfrewshire number one Matthew Clark. The other wins in the singles came from Les Pirie who saw off David Miller by 2 & 1. Alan McKie of Glencruitten continued his fine play in the morning turning a one hole deficit after ten holes into a 4 & 3 victory against local member Stephen Higgins with the highlight being a spectacular eagle at the par five thirteenth. The other Argyll & Bute contribution came with a half point from Millport's Gordon Lundie who let slip a dormie two lead.

This left the overall result 9 points to 6 in Renfrewshire's favour gaining revenge for last year's area team defeat.

The closing date for the Argyll & Bute Spring Meeting was Thursday 27th April , but however late entries may be permitted if space permits.

Please contact Area Secretary Graham Bolton on 0772 062 7397 for details. The draw should be on club notice boards by Tuesday but can be viewed on www.argyllandbutegolfunion.com on Sunday night.

Ross receiving trophy from Club Captain Abernethy

Ross Currie of the home club Machrihanish clinched his first Argyll and Bute county championship last Sunday by beating Rothesay's Chris Timms by 4 & 3 in the 18 hole final. Ross's performance was impressive with long straight driving harnessing a razor sharp short game which kept Chris at bay most of the round.

Their route to the final was not without incident with Ross having to go up the 18th & 19th in two of his matches seeing off holder Graham Bolton in the semi final. Chris's route was also difficult having to see off a determined Jim O'Donnell and Gordon Lundie along the way with narrow victories on the 18th hole.

The remergence of Currie, the emergence of Lundie(Millport) & the steady play of Timms will give the selectors something to think about when the six man team to play the Lothians in the Area team championship in May is selected. Full results can be viewed on the website www.argyllandbutegolfunion.com

Argyll and Bute's six man team slipped to a narrow defeat at the hands of Perth & Kinross last weekend at Machrihanish. Played in glorious sunshine it was a close fought affair with several of the games going to the last hole.

The morning foursomes saw A& B's George MacMillan & Steven Gilmour take on Scottish Champion Glenn Campbell and his partner Stuart Graham.

The locals were in control most of the game until three putts on both the 16th & 17th saw them slip to a narrow 2&1 defeat.

Game two saw Les Pirie & Chris Timms against Geoege Stubbs & Neil Barr. Off to a stuttering start the Argyll & Bute pairing never recovered and eventually succumbed to a 3 & 2 defeat.

Final game of the morning saw George Reynolds & Graham Bolton play Mark Rose & David Simpson. In control for most of the game Reynolds & Bolton then contrived to let Perth & Kinross into the game. It was only an inspired chip with a fairway wood from Reynolds at the last that gave Bolton a seven footer for a par four which he duly slotted home for a narrow one hole victory.

Trailing 2-1 it was all to play for in the afternoon singles. Les Pirie out first for A&B gave Scottish Champion Campbell a fright. Les in charge most of the game was on the receiving end of some inspired putting from Campbell in the last three holes to slip to a narrow 1 hole defeat.

Game two saw local champion George MacMillan beat George Stubbs convincingly 4 & 3.

Game three was a more close fought affair wth Steven Gilmour fighting back from four down at the turn to be narrowly beaten at the last by Neil Barr.

Fourth game was George Reynolds against Stuart Graham. George held an early advantage but a comeback from his opponent saw the game go down the last with George gaining a half point to maintain his unbeaten record for the 2005 season

Game five saw Graham Bolton take on Mark Rose. Bolton seized an early advantage but somehow contrived to throw away his lead with some careless putting, only to clinch the game on the 18th and maintain his 100% record this year.

Final game saw Chris Timms fight back from dormie four down to eventually succumb to a narrow one hole defeat to David Simpson.

Defeated 5.5 - 3.5 it was no disgrace as many of the games were very close and with a little luck a victory was not far away.
