Graham Bolton wins 9th matchplay title at windswept Machrihanish Dunes
Graham Bolton of Bute Golf Club won his 9th Area matchplay title at a windswept Machrihanish Dunes with a 2&1 victory over Millport's Craig Pirie.
Strong south easterly winds greeted the 16 competitors who gathered at the Dunes on Saturday morning which made playing conditions difficult. Bolton made the final after victories over Mark Donaldson, John Jack and George Reynolds. Craig Pirie's route to the final was via wins over Jack Reynolds, Les Pirie and Michael Murty.
The final itself was a seesaw battle with Bolton off to a flyer being 3 up after 5, going 4 up after 8, but Pirie battled back with some good play to reduce the deficit to 1 hole with 3 to play. However Bolton edged further in front after a birdie at the par five 16th and secured victory with a par at the 17th.
It wasn't just Bolton that emerged the winner , with the course providing a great matchplay venue with the undulating greens providing plenty of challenges for the players. The area would like to thank Machrihanish Dunes for hosting the event and in particular HGK Simon Freeman and Malcolm Mitchell for preparing a course in first class condition. Thanks also to Lorna and Peter for looking after us in the clubhouse and keeping us fed and watered.
The next area action will be the Spring Meeting on 22nd June at Taynuilt.
